Hyperextension

The Hyperextension is a bodyweight exercise that primarily targets the lower back. It is a staple in well-designed hypertrophy and strength programs when programmed with proper volume and progressive overload.

How to perform the Hyperextension

  1. 1Set yourself face down on the back extension bench with your hips resting on the pad, heels locked under the footpads, body in a straight line, and arms crossed over your chest or hands lightly behind your head.
  2. 2From this straight position, slowly lower your upper body by bending at the hips until you feel a stretch in the back of your thighs, then squeeze your glutes and lower back to raise your torso back in line with your legs, breathing in as you lower and out as you lift with smooth, controlled movement.

Coach tips

  • Keep your neck in line with your spine by looking slightly down toward the floor, not up in front of you.
  • Stop at a straight line at the top and avoid arching your back past that point to protect your lower back.
  • Tighten your abs the whole time and avoid bouncing or using momentum to swing your body up.
