Incline Bench Dumbbell Press

The Incline Bench Dumbbell Press is a dumbbell exercise that primarily targets the chest. It is a staple in well-designed hypertrophy and strength programs when programmed with proper volume and progressive overload.

How to perform the Incline Bench Dumbbell Press

  1. 1Sit on an incline bench set at about 30–45 degrees with a dumbbell in each hand and your feet flat on the floor. Lean back, bring the dumbbells to the sides of your chest with palms facing forward, and gently pull your shoulders down and back into the bench.
  2. 2Press the dumbbells up over your chest in a smooth, controlled motion, stopping just before they touch, then slowly lower them back down for about 2–3 seconds until you feel a stretch across your chest. Breathe out as you press the weights up and breathe in through your nose as you lower them down.

Coach tips

  • Keep your elbows slightly in toward your sides (not straight out) to protect your shoulders and keep the focus on your chest.
  • Lower only as far as you can while keeping your shoulders pressed into the bench and your chest lifted, instead of letting your shoulders roll forward.
  • Choose a weight you can control smoothly, especially on the way down, without bouncing or letting the dumbbells crash together at the top.
