How to perform the Incline Smith Machine Chest Press

  1. 1Sit on the incline bench under the Smith bar with your feet flat, eyes roughly under the bar, and the bench set at a slight to moderate incline. Grab the bar a little wider than shoulder-width, squeeze your shoulder blades together, keep a small natural arch in your lower back, and unrack the bar over your upper chest.
  2. 2Lower the bar slowly toward your upper chest in a controlled way as you breathe in, stopping just above your chest without bouncing. Press the bar back up as you breathe out, straightening your arms without locking your elbows, keeping the bar moving in a smooth, steady rhythm.

Coach tips

  • Keep your wrists straight over your elbows so the bar stays over your chest, not toward your neck.
  • Don’t let your elbows flare out too wide; keep them at about a 45-degree angle to protect your shoulders.
  • Set the safety stops just above your chest height so the bar can’t drop too low if you miss a rep.
