Roman Chair Leg Raises

The Roman Chair Leg Raises is a bodyweight exercise that primarily targets the core. It is a staple in well-designed hypertrophy and strength programs when programmed with proper volume and progressive overload.

How to perform the Roman Chair Leg Raises

  1. 1Rest your forearms on the pads, grab the handles, press your back gently into the pad, let your legs hang straight down, and tighten your abs like you're bracing for a light punch.
  2. 2Keeping your upper body still, slowly lift your legs together in front of you until they’re about hip height (or a bit higher if you can), then lower them back down with control, breathing out as you lift and in as you lower.

Coach tips

  • Avoid swinging or using momentum; if it’s too hard with straight legs, bend your knees to make it easier while still feeling your abs work.
  • Think about curling your hips slightly toward your chest at the top so your lower abs and side abs really kick in.
  • If you feel strain in your lower back, shorten your range of motion and focus on keeping your core tight and your back gently pressed into the pad.
