How to perform the Smith Machine Calf Raise

  1. 1Set the bar on the Smith machine around shoulder height, place the balls of your feet on a sturdy block or weight plate with your heels hanging off, and rest the bar across your upper back with your hands just outside your shoulders, then stand tall to lift the bar off the hooks and straighten your legs without locking your knees. Keep your chest up, core gently tight, and look straight ahead.
  2. 2Lower your heels slowly toward the floor until you feel a comfortable stretch in your calves. Push hard through the balls of your feet to raise your heels as high as you can, squeezing your calves at the top, exhaling as you rise and inhaling as you lower, and repeat with smooth, controlled reps without bouncing.

  • Use a solid block or plate that won’t slide so you feel stable and safe when your heels hang off the edge.
  • Move through a full range of motion—big stretch at the bottom and strong squeeze at the top—instead of doing short, bouncy reps.
  • Keep your ankles from rolling outward or inward and avoid locking your knees so the work stays in your calves and not your joints.
