How to perform the Smith Machine Overhead Press

  1. 1Set the bar around upper-chest height, sit on an upright bench or stand under the bar with your feet solid on the floor, and grab it a little wider than shoulder-width so it rests near your chin or front shoulders.
  2. 2Twist the bar to unrack it, tighten your abs, press the bar straight up until your arms are almost straight (not fully locked), then lower it back down slowly to about chin or shoulder level, breathing out as you press and in as you lower.

Coach tips

  • Keep your ribs down and your abs tight so your lower back doesn’t arch and your body doesn’t sway.
  • Let your elbows stay under the bar instead of flaring too far out to the sides to keep your shoulders comfortable.
  • Use a weight you can control smoothly; if you’re bouncing or losing the path, lower the weight and focus on steady, controlled reps.
