Step-Up

The Step-Up is a bodyweight exercise that primarily targets the quads, with assistance from the glutes. It is a staple in well-designed hypertrophy and strength programs when programmed with proper volume and progressive overload.

How to perform the Step-Up

  1. 1Stand facing a sturdy step or bench about knee height or lower, with your feet hip-width apart, chest up, and core gently braced. Place your whole foot (not just your toes) on the step so your heel is firmly planted and your knee is roughly in line with your toes.
  2. 2Press through the heel of the foot on the step to lift your body up in about 2 seconds, straightening that leg and bringing the other foot up to lightly touch or stand beside it; breathe out as you rise. Slowly lower the back foot to the floor in about 2–3 seconds, keeping control and your front knee tracking over your toes, then repeat for all reps before switching legs or alternate legs each rep.

Coach tips

  • Keep your chest up and eyes forward so you don’t lean too far over your front knee.
  • Push through the heel of the foot on the step instead of launching yourself up with the back leg or bouncing.
  • Control the way down—don’t drop off the step—as this protects your knees and helps you build more strength.
