Cable Curl

The Cable Curl is a cable exercise that primarily targets the biceps. It is a staple in well-designed hypertrophy and strength programs when programmed with proper volume and progressive overload.

How to perform the Cable Curl

  1. 1Stand facing the cable machine with the pulley set low, grab the straight or EZ bar with an underhand grip, and step back slightly so the weight lifts and your arms are straight with your elbows close to your sides. Stand tall with your chest up, shoulders relaxed, and feet about hip-width apart.
  2. 2Curl the bar up toward your chest by bending at your elbows, keeping them pinned to your sides and squeezing your biceps at the top, then slowly lower the bar back down under control until your arms are straight again while breathing out as you curl up and in as you lower down.

Coach tips

  • Keep your upper arms still and close to your body so your biceps do the work instead of swinging with your shoulders or back.
  • Use a weight that lets you move smoothly without jerking or using momentum, especially at the bottom of the curl.
  • Think about squeezing your biceps hard at the top of each rep and fully straightening your arms at the bottom for a full range of motion.
