How to perform the Cable Curl (Straight-Bar)
- 1Stand facing the cable machine with the pulley set low, grab the straight bar with an underhand grip, and keep your elbows close to your sides while you stand tall with your chest up. Take a small step back so the weight stack is slightly lifted and your arms are straight but not locked out.
- 2Curl the bar up toward your chest in a smooth, controlled motion, squeezing your biceps at the top and breathing out as you lift. Slowly lower the bar back down until your arms are straight again while breathing in, keeping your body still and not swinging the weight.
Coach tips
- Keep your elbows pinned close to your sides so your biceps do the work instead of your shoulders.
- Use a weight you can control without leaning back or swinging; if your body starts rocking, go lighter.
- Think about squeezing your biceps at the top of each rep and fully straightening your arms at the bottom for a full range of motion.
