Sit-Up

The Sit-Up is a bodyweight exercise that primarily targets the core. It is a staple in well-designed hypertrophy and strength programs when programmed with proper volume and progressive overload.

How to perform the Sit-Up

  1. 1Lie on your back with your knees bent, feet flat on the floor, and your hands lightly touching the sides of your head or crossed over your chest. Keep your lower back gently against the floor and look up so your neck stays relaxed.
  2. 2Tighten your abs and curl your upper body up toward your knees until your lower back just starts to lift, then slowly lower yourself back down with control. Breathe out as you come up and breathe in as you return to the floor.

Coach tips

  • Press your lower back gently into the floor before you start to keep the work in your abs, not your lower back.
  • Avoid pulling on your neck with your hands; think about your chest moving up rather than your head.
  • Move in a smooth, controlled way instead of using momentum or bouncing off the floor.
